Coatings Systems

We develop specialty additives by understanding the formulation system used in various applications. We translate the needs of such systems into our particle attribute to provide the right solution for our customers.

Paints and coatings are used to protect and beautify a wide variety of surfaces. The substrate used, performance required and application environment dictates the choice of resin or binder. Some of the major resins by chemistry are:

  • Epoxy resins have excellent film building, mechanical and chemical properties.
  • Alkyd resins are suitable for interior, exterior, underground as well as underwater applications. They have good moisture and damage resistance. However, they tend to take a longer process time.
  • Polyurethane resins have high resistance to corrosion and weathering.
  • Acrylic resins are quick-drying, high-gloss finish, and long-lasting color retention. On the negative side, they tend to have lower corrosion resistance.

In addition to resin, additives and pigments, coatings also contain a liquid to dissolve or disperse formulation components and make coating application easy. This liquid is water (water-based coatings) or an organic solvent (solvent-based coatings). The actual film forming content of such liquid systems ranges between 30 ~ 60%, the rest of the content is exhausted into the atmosphere or wasted. Powder coatings, on the other hand, are 100% solid. As a result, more then 90% of the material ends up being applied to the final part. They have the lowest level of emission because they do not contain any solvent. However, elevated temperatures are typically required to cure and crosslink such a system, which can make them unsuitable for some applications.

Water-Based Coatings

Water-based coatings systems are increasingly used to reduce the level of emission of organic solvents to the atmosphere, however these systems require high evaporation energy and controlled environment to ensure controlled drying. These systems can be found in architectural, aerospace, automotive and many other industries. We have been pioneering products specifically suitable for water-based formulations.

Our CAB-O-SPERSE fumed silica and fumed alumina dispersions are highly stable dispersant-free and electrostatically stabilized dispersions. As part of the metal pre-treatment coating, they offer stability in formulation and improved distribution of the additive particles throughout the coated pretreatment layer. Their high surface area helps induce uniform nucleation of the coating substrate.

Solvent-Based Coatings

Solvent-based coatings have excellent storage stability and are easy to handle during production and applications. However, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) negatively impact the environment. These coatings are versatile and can be formulated to meet various performance requirements. They are used in a wide range of industries, including automotive, industrial, aerospace, marine and architectural applications. We have a range of products specifically suitable for such systems.

Our CAB-O-SIL TS-720 fumed silica provides good thickening efficiency, sag resistance and anti-settling of pigments. At the same time, the hydrophobic surface of this fumed silica introduces very little moisture into a solvent-based system, retarding premature crosslinking of moisture cured systems.

CAB-O-SIL® TS-720 fumed silica

Our CAB-O-SIL TS-720 fumed silica provides good thickening efficiency, sag resistance and anti-settling of pigments. At the same time, the hydrophobic surface of this fumed silica introduces very little moisture into a solvent-based system, retarding premature crosslinking of moisture cured systems.

Powder Coatings

Powder coatings are applied in the form of a free-flowing, dry powder. They are applied electrostatically and are then heat cured to allow them to flow and form a coating. They provide a hard surface finish that is much tougher than conventional paint, which results in excellent chemical and environmental resistance. Our fumed metal oxide products help to improve the color performance, processing, application and mechanical properties of powder coatings.

Our SpectrAl® fumed alumina and CAB-O-SIL® fumed silica products provide tribo-charging, free-flow, fluidization and anti-blocking in powder coating applications. Typically, fumed alumina is used for tribo coating processes and hydrophilic or hexamethyldisilazane (HMDZ) treated fumed silica is selected for corona coating processes.
