Air Contaminants

We are reducing air pollution at our facilities worldwide. Implementation of controls and best practices at our facilities in Brazil, China and the United States demonstrate our ongoing commitment to operating world-class, environmentally-friendly facilities.

We have a long-standing commitment to emission reduction. From the development of low nitrogen oxide (NOX) tail gas burners, the implementation of particulate matter monitoring systems, and state-of-the-art controls for NOX and sulfur dioxide (SO2), we have continued to improve our environmental footprint. 

Two of our newest environmental goals are to reduce NOby 20% and SOby 40% by 2025 compared to our 2012 baseline. While we have seen a slight uptick in absolute NOemissions, our absolute SOemissions have decreased since 2012. We have also reduced the intensity of both air emissions per metric ton of production by 10% and 15%, respectively.

We have successfully implemented selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for the control of NOin the carbon black industry in China. These same technologies will be implemented at our carbon black operating facilities in the United States. Additionally, we have implemented particulate monitoring systems in our carbon black plants that gives us an "early warning" of increasing emissions from our operations to allow us to react and implement corrective measures before these emissions are visible.
