Local outreach has been an essential element of our culture throughout our history, and we strive to make a positive and lasting difference in our communities.
Employees, through their generous spirit and willingness to lend their time and resources, are a natural extension of our community relations. We dedicate our time as supporters and volunteers at a variety of local and global organizations, such as:
- Perkins, a progressive, multi-faceted organization committed to improving the lives of people with blindness and deafblindness all around the world
- Boys and Girls Clubs of America, a national organization of local chapters which provide after-school programs for young people
- Susan G. Komen® 3-Day, an annual event in which thousands of women and men walk 60 miles over the course of three days to raise money for breast cancer research
- Fundacion Mamonal, an organization that promotes and protects industrial and social development in the Mamonal Industrial Park and the greater Cartagena area
- Read to a Child, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing children's success in life by inspiring adults to read to them
- Pan-Mass Challenge, an annual bike-a-thon that crosses Massachusetts, USA to raise money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
In 2015, the Cabot Corporation Foundation, Inc. donated or pledged approximately $800,000 in direct and in-direct support of a wide range of programs aimed to contribute to community success, improve science and technology literacy and support human services programs. In addition, at the facility level, we collectively made approximately $400,000 of in kind donations and we actively contribute our time and talent to support the communities where we work and live.
Focus on Education
Youth Leadership and Conservation
We recently funded a youth conservation and leadership project in Boston Harbor on Peddocks Island through the Boston Harbor Island Alliance.
A crew of eight high school students and two crew leaders spent three weeks camping on the 200-acre island and working on specific conservation projects. The students participated in a labor intensive field experience, where they learned to incorporate environmental education and a sustainable “leave no trace” ethics into their work. They also attended a half day educational presentation and tour of our Billerica Business and Technology Center. Through the experience, the students also developed a new mindset, connecting broader environmental issues with their own lives.
Science & Engineering Fair
We have been the lead sponsor of the Massachusetts State Science & Engineering Fair (MSSEF) for the last 20 years.
The MSSEF, founded by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a passionate group of science educators, has been advancing science literacy and inspiring new generations of science and engineering leaders since 1949. Every year, a number of our employees serve as expert judges of student projects at the middle and high school fairs, and as master of ceremonies.
Supporting Local Schools in China
Our team in Xingtai, China made a series of donations to local schools to help students and their families who need financial support pursue education.
In Tianjin, China we donated to the Tianjin Binhai New Area Charity Association. The sum will go towards providing 56 students with financial support to help them complete their studies. Additonally, we celebrated our 10th anniversary in Jiangxi, China by donating to the Yongxiu County Third Middle School to purchase computers and classroom equipment. And in Shanghai, China we presented an additional donation to the Minhang branch of the Shanghai Charity Foundation.
Supporting Education in the Boston Area
At the Perkins School in Watertown, Massachusetts, USA we provide funding for a teaching assistant in the school’s secondary program mathematics department.
At Perkins, which was founded in 1829 as the nation’s first chartered school for children who are blind, a mathematics teaching assistant designs and edits diagrams, charts, graphs and 3-dimensional models for math lessons. The teaching assistant also leads group lessons and provides individualized support to students.
Giving Back to the Community
Community Cycling to End Homelessness
In an effort to support HomeStart, a non-profit committed to preventing homelessness, a group of employees participated in an hour-long, outdoor spin cycle event in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
The funds raised from the event were used to place seven families into permanent housing. We have been an active sponsor of various HomeStart events over the years and have participated in the annual ICycle event which draws support from a number of Boston-based businesses and local news and sports celebrities.
Children's Hospital Support
Our EMEA Business Service Center in Riga, Latvia donated a state-of-the art incubator to the Children’s Clinical University Hospital, the leading pediatric health care provider in Latvia.
Given that approximately 350 Latvian children are born prematurely each year, there was a pressing need for equipment that can regulate the babies’ body temperature as well as protect them from germs and noise. We are delighted that the new incubator will give these infants a fighting chance to grow up to lead happy and healthy lives. As many of our employees and their families have their own stories about time spent in the hospital, it is rewarding to be involved with organizations that are so close to our hearts.
Run for Recovery
We were proud to sponsor the Boston Bulldogs Run for Recovery 5K race. Boston Bulldogs is a local non-profit running club that provides support to those battling addiction, those in recovery and family and friends who have been affected by addiction.
Valmez Celebrates 20th Anniversary
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of our manufacturing facility in the Czech Republic, our Valmez team held an open house for the community.
Neighbors, contractors and employees’ family members joined for a site tour. Our guides took the guests through the laboratory, the control room and the production area.
Botlek Engages with Local Community
At our manufacturing facility in the Netherlands, members of our Botlek team regularly join 16 other local companies to participate on a regional community “sounding board.”
This group discusses common issues affecting the region, including sustainability, as well as specific concerns raised by neighbors. In 2014, the sounding board had its meeting at our Botlek site, along with students invited from a local elementary school. The goal of the combined visit was to help stimulate the interests of the children in science and throughout the chemical industry in the area. In this half-day session, some 50 kids were introduced to our products, and conducted a variety of chemical experiments.
